A little history of the business . . .
Elwood (Hap) and Emily Hanscom began construction of their quaint cottages in the early 1950’s and completed construction of Hanscom’s Motel and Cottage in the spring of 1959. They added their pool in 1969, to the delight of their many grand children. Hap was a carpenter by trade, while Emily provided maid and laundry services for the summer resident’s of Mount Desert Island. Hap and Emily had 3 children, Robert (Bobby, also my Dad), Virginia (Aunt Ginny), and Helen (Aunt Helen) who at one point or another have been involved in the family business. After Hap and Emily, my grandparents, passed away, my dad and Aunt Ginny took over operations of the motel and cottage’s. They both, along with my mom (Jeanette) and Uncle Buddy, ran it successfully for the next 8 years. In the mid 1970’s Aunt Ginny and Uncle Buddy sold their portion of the motel to my parents. Bobby and Jeanette had 5 children, Roberta, Robert, Donna, Annette, and me (Mark). All of us also at one point or another have helped with the motel and cottages. In 1996 my wife (Marydeane) and I took an active role in the daily operations of the business. After my dad passed we helped my mom run the motel for a few more years until we purchased it from the family in 2005. For this very short paragraph there are thousands of memories that add to the rich heritage of this small family business. We still have returning guest that share memories of all generations involved with Hanscom’s Motel and Cottages.
About our family . . .
Marydeane and I have two wonderful children, Robert and Andy. Robert is graduating from high school this year and is attending college next year for construction management. Andy is in 6th grade and currently plans on being a professional baseball, basketball, or football player in the upcoming years. We’ll keep you posted!! Marydeane has run the motel for over 12 years, been a full time mother, and has been the heart and soul of the motel as my mother and grand mother did before. As for myself, I have worked at the MDI Biological Lab since the late 1990’s as the Physical Plant Director, continue as a commercial lobsterman, and help Marydeane with the motel. We have completely renovated my grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, siblings, and family’s motel to new condition. Both Marydeane and I thank you for considering Hanscom’s Motel and Cottages in your vacation plans.
